The Book as a Magical Object
As the organiser of the Municipality of Penteli’s 2nd Youth Festival in 2025, Apicco delivered the free experiential workshop The Book as a Magical Object. Held on 19 June 2025 at the Melissia Cultural Centre, the workshop was aimed at teachers, trainers and artists.
It was delivered in collaboration with the Department of Theatre Studies at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, with facilitators Titika Dimitroulia, Kleio Fanouraki and Konstantinos Marougas. The workshop explored educational drama and its application in educational and artistic practice, taking the book as its starting point.
Through this initiative, Apicco incorporated adult professional development into the Youth Festival programme, connecting university expertise with the work of people in education and culture.
2021
Training seminar for adult educators and prison volunteers – Overcoming barriers in prison
Apicco and the Georgios Zouganelis Network for Culture and Education in Prisons co-organised the free online seminar Overcoming Barriers in Prison on 3–4 and 17–18 April 2021. It was aimed at educators, teachers, volunteers and students involved in, or interested in joining, educational and creative programmes in prisons.
The 50-hour programme combined live online learning, independent study, exercises, an assignment and feedback. Talks and workshops addressed prison education, barriers to learning and social reintegration. Topics included theatre and drama, creative writing, short filmmaking, school newspapers and teaching Greek.
Apicco contributed the workshop Enriching Experiential Education through Theatre and Drama Techniques and Methods, led by Sofia Ioannidi, alongside a presentation of its activities supporting reintegration.
2017–present
APICCO adult theatre education
Since 2017, Apicco has run an adult theatre group that brings together formerly incarcerated people and volunteers from the wider community. The group provides an ongoing space for theatre education, connection and collective creation.
Through theatre education, participants explore theatre practice and work together, with personal expression, communication and collaboration at the centre of the learning process. Bringing together people with different life experiences creates opportunities to participate as equals and express themselves through art.
The group’s long-standing activity reflects Apicco’s sustained involvement in adult arts education and its commitment to creating spaces for learning and participation.
2017–2019
Adult theatre education workshops at the Municipal Regional Theatre of Roumeli
From 2017 to 2019, Apicco collaborated with the Municipal and Regional Theatre of Roumeli in Lamia, supporting two cycles of adult theatre workshops. Classes took place at the Cultural Centre of the Municipality of Lamia and at the theatre of the Municipal and Regional Theatre of Roumeli, covering acting, stage speech, movement and improvisation.
The learning process connected work on the body and voice with creative expression and stage practice. The workshop programme culminated in a production of Federico García Lorca’s The House of Bernarda Alba, directed by Giorgos Dampasis and presented at the Municipal and Regional Theatre of Roumeli.
The collaboration combined training across several theatre disciplines with their application in a complete production, forming a substantial part of Apicco’s experience in adult arts education.
2016
Theatre in the facilitation of vulnerable groups
Apicco – Social Cooperative Enterprise for Collective and Social Benefit took part in You.Th.i Festival, a festival of youth and free expression held on 10 April 2016 at Cartel Art Space in Aigaleo, with a training workshop for social science professionals.
Led by Apicco’s founding members, Giorgos Dampasis and Sofia Ioannidi, the workshop explored the use of theatre to facilitate work with vulnerable groups. It connected theatre practice with group work, approaching theatre as a means of expression, communication and active participation.
This initiative forms part of Apicco’s experience in training professionals who work with vulnerable populations, connecting arts education with its social mission.
